Considering the Sardonic Cartoons from EuroHell, I have to stay I’m quite stunned by what I read overall, either from the apologists (among whish I’m frankly sorry to count the US Department of State, and not surprised to add former President Bill “Bubba” Clinton) or from many of those who are on the right side of the defense of free speech.

The first are basically issuing groveling apologies on the basis that “showing the prophet as a terrorist is insulting and offensive for the Muslims’ sensitivity”, while the other are more or less arguing - with reason - that these cartoons are really not much to write home about, and busy digging among the vast pile of drawings produced by the other side (Muslim, and mostly Arab press) which definitely qualify as hardcore, in order to prove their point.

Both, however, are tragically wrong.

And that’s because both are way ahead of - and therefore can’t grasp - the mindset of those fanatics. Truly, you wouldn’t make very good profilers guys.

In order to understand this, you have to give up your old (far older than Islam) Western rationalism and scientific method (abstraction, and all that shit). You have to go down, deep down to the level of the Jihadi’s Manichean mindest:

Those crazies are not burning buildings, threatening their host countries in their very streets and murdering Christian priests whenever they can because we drew a few cartoons showing their prophet in insulting or offensive ways ; they do that because we drew a few cartoons showing their prophet. Period.

It makes all the difference. They are not asking for respect and moderation within our frame of interaction, they are indeed engaging into nothing less than cultural imperialism.

For them, the point is not that we shouldn’t represent the prophet with a bomb in the turban, a rubber thong and a pink feather up his Holy Bottom (PBUH) or a nice, fancy and well cut Armani suit and a good clean shave, the point is we must not represent the prophet because Islam forbids it.

Once - if - they get there and we surrender, well… There’s plenty of things forbidden by Islam to come next.
